Cutty Sark

The ship is located on a special site alongside the Thames at Greenwich. The first of my shots are from a visit I made on the 20thAugust 2015 I then have a small selection I took back in July 2005, before the fire.  The fire occurred on the 21st May 2007 the ship was refurbished and then reopened to the public in 2012.

The next few shots are from my visit in 2005, before the fire.

The rebuild has made a considerable improvement to the visitor experience of this very popular London attraction. Back in 2005 the ship was looking very run down and was in the process of being refurbished when the fire took place. The figurehead collection had been removed at the time of the fire and was put into storage thus saving the collection. Now it has also been refurbished it is looking perfect in the new display gallery under the ship.

South Foreland Lighthouse

This was the first lighthouse in the World to use electric light it was used to guide shipping through the Dover Straits. It is now a National Trust property, you can visit the top of the tower and the light.

Below is the second South Foreland Lighthouse, it was built at the same time as the main light further up the cliff. It’s job was to give a bearing by lining up the two lights for navigators to avoid the sand bank close to the approach to Dover. However  this proved to become unreliable soon after the light was commissioned due to the shifting nature of the sands & the light was switched off.
